Activités


Les activités de l’équipe Minéralogie Environnementale de l’IMPMC sont centrées sur la compréhension et la modélisation des réactions impliquant des minéraux au cours de certaines étapes fondamentales des cycles (bio)géochimiques des éléments à la Surface de la Terre (altération des roches, formation des sols, transport par les eaux, sédimentation, diagenèse). Ces processus font intervenir des réactions aux interfaces solide-solution-organismes biologiques qui sont étudiées sur des sites naturels pilotes et sur des systèmes modèles au laboratoire, à l’aide de techniques de spectroscopie (Spectroscopie d’absorption des rayons X, Résonance magnétique, Infrarouge), de diffraction des rayons X sous atmosphère contrôlée, et de microscopie (MEB, MET), et de modélisation ab initio (DFT), qui permettent de décrire les mécanismes de ces réactions jusqu’à l’échelle moléculaire.



Cristallochimie des minéraux marqueurs

Les minéraux de basse température constituent des archives du fonctionnement géochimique et de l'histoire de la surface de notre planète. L'information y est notamment séquestrée sous forme d'éléments traces dont l'abondance, la spéciation et la composition isotopique sont déterminées par les paramètres physico-chimiques et biologiques qui prévalaient lors de la croisssance cristalline. Il est donc du rôle du minéralogiste de préciser les liens complexes existant entre l'information à l'échelle moléculaire et sa signification géochimique et de s'assurer de la qualité de la préservation de cette information. Dans ce contexte, nos travaux concernent la compréhension des processus de fractionnement isotopique, l'incorporation des impuretés moléculaires dans les minéraux biogéniques et la compréhension des mécanismes de fossilisation. 

    Modélisation ab initio des fractionnements isotopiques

Les travaux précurseurs réalisés depuis environ 10 ans dans le domaine de la modélisation ab initio des coefficients de fractionnements isotopiques nous ont ainsi permis d'aborder efficacement les processus de fractionnements isotopiques entre solides et solutions [Pinilla et al. 2014; 2015] et de l'appliquer aux nouveaux systèmes isotopiques comme le fer et le zinc [Blanchard et al. 2015; Ducher et al. 2016], particulièrement étudiés par les géochimistes.

    Environnement local des impuretés et traceurs géochimiques

La combinaison d'approches expérimentales (spectroscopies vibrationnelles à basse température et RMN) et théoriques (calculs DFT), nous a permis pour la première fois de proposer et de valider des modèles moléculaires de l'environnement de traces tels que les borates et les sulfates dans les carbonates de calcium, considérés respectivement comme des "proxy" du pH et des conditions rédox des océans anciens [Balan et al. 2014; 2016 a,b]. Ces approches permettent également de tracer efficacement les mécanismes de transformation des matériaux biologiques lors de la fossilisation. Ainsi, l'analyse des modifications de l'environnement moléculaires des groupes carbonates structuraux des apatites révèle une modification aux plus petites échelles spatiales des matériaux constituant le squelette des vertébrés [Yi et al. 2013, 2014 a,b; Balan et al. 2016], "Nouvelle de l'INSU" 2013 (http://www.insu.cnrs.fr/en/node/4370).

Dynamique des surfaces continentales : Processus d’altération et d’érosion

    Datation des sols latéritiques

Lors de programmes CAPES COFECUB (Brésil), PICS/CNRS (Brésil) et SYSTER/INSU (Inde), nous avons échantillonné et analysé des profils latéritiques et des cuirasses ferrugineuses pour appliquer la méthode de datation des kaolinites développée au laboratoire. L’objectif principal est d’établir la relation entre formation des latérites et paléoclimats (et géodynamique), que ce soit à l’échelle globale ou plus régionale. Pendant la thèse de M. Mathian, l’ensemble des données préliminaires est soumis à plusieurs familles de corrections nécessitant des analyses complémentaires mais montre déjà des âges anciens, tertiaires, qu’il faudra confronter aux données paléoclimatiques globales et aux évènements régionaux (ex : surrection des Andes, fermeture de l’isthme de Panama, dérive de l’Inde).

    Traçage minéralogique et isotopique des sources de l’érosion

Après un échantillonnage effectué lors d’un programme EC2CO, nous avons cherché à savoir si le fer complexé à la matière organique colloidale, marqueur d’érosion des sols, était stable lors des chocs physicochimiques survenant au niveau de certaines confluences d’Amazonie. Le mélange du rio Negro et du Solimoes, caractérisé par un écart de pH de 2 unités et tracé par les isotopes de l’hydrogène, montre une déstabilisation des complexes organométalliques et la formation de colloïdes d’oxydes de fer compatible avec l’augmentation de pH [Mulholland et al., 2015]. Le mélange est donc non conservatif. De plus, en collaboration avec F. Poitrasson (GET, DR CNRS) nous avons déterminé que les colloïdes du rio Negro sont enrichis en isotopes lourds du fer, signature acquise en amont lors des processus d’oxydation et de complexation en environnement podzolique. Par contre, la signature de l’Amazone est compatible avec celle de la croûte continentale.

    Dynamique des éléments traces métalliques sous climat tropical

Les gisements latéritiques de Nouvelle-Calédonie représentent 20 à 30% des réserves mondiales de nickel connues à l’heure actuelle. Si les minerais les plus riches qui correspondent aux garniérites de la base des profils d’altération sont relativement bien connus, les phases porteuses des éléments stratégiques, Ni, Co, Cr dans les minerais plus pauvres de type oxydes du sommet des profils sont beaucoup moins bien identifiées. Nous avons mené un large programme d’étude visant à comprendre les conditions de formation de ces gisements au cours des processus d’altération des roches ultrabasiques, à l’échelle de plusieurs dizaines de millions d’années. Porté par E. Fritsch (DR IRD), ce projet a été financé par le CNRT Ni et Environnement. Les mesures spectroscopiques sur rayonnement synchrotron menées par G. Dublet a cours de sa thèse ont permis de comprendre les facteurs de concentration [Dublet et al. 2012, 2014] puis d’appauvrissement [Dublet et al. 2015] en nickel Ni depuis la base des profils vers leur sommet

    Dynamique du carbone sous climat tropical : le rôle des mangroves

Les mangroves, qui occupent 75 % des littoraux tropicaux et subtropicaux, constituent un puits pour le CO2 atmosphérique et une source de nutriments pour les eaux côtières (Lee et al., 2014), fonctions qui pourraient évoluer avec le changement climatique. Depuis 4 ans, nous avons développé un observatoire de la mangrove suivant un gradient latitudinal climatique entre la Nouvelle Zélande, la Nouvelle-Calédonie et le Vietnam. Nous avons montré que le stockage du carbone dans les sédiments des mangroves dépend de l’âge de la mangrove et de sa position intertidale [Marchand et al., in press], des variations saisonnières du microphytobenthos à la surface des sédiments [Leopold et al., 2013; 2015], ainsi que des émissions de CO2 à l’interface eau-atmosphère [Leopold et al., in press]. Les échanges nets de CO2 au niveau de l’écosystème sont suivis par des stations d’eddy-covariance qui ont été installées dans chaque pays de l’observatoire. Les premiers résultats sur la fameuse mangrove du Cœur de Voh en Nouvelle-Calédonie montrent l’importance du stress lié au manque d’eau sur la productivité de l’écosystème [Leopold et al., 2016].
L’urbanisation des littoraux tropicaux et l’augmentation massive du rejet d’eaux usées dans la mangrove pourraient fortement modifier la dynamique du carbone au sein de l’écosystème. Nous avons ainsi montré qu’une partie des effluents aquacoles pouvait être recyclée par les sols et les palétuviers, accroissant la productivité de ces derniers, mais que la mangrove n’était qu’un filtre partiel ne pouvant traiter un volume trop conséquent [Molnar et al., 2013; 2014 ; Aschenbroich et al., 2015]. Différents indicateurs de suivi de la qualité du milieu ont été identifiés [Debenay et al., 2015 : Della Patrona et al., 2016].

Biominéralisations et atténuation naturelle aux interfaces redox

Importance des sulfures biogéniques

Piégeage du nickel dans les sulfures de fer naturels. Les mécanismes de formation des sulfures métalliques dans les milieux naturels de basse température restent très mal compris. Au cours de la thèse de la thèse CIFRE de Vincent Noël (2011-2014) avec Koniambo Nickel SAS, nous avons montré par microscopie électronique et spectroscopie EXAFS que le nickel co-précipite avec la pyrite dans les sédiments de mangroves de Nouvelle-Calédonie [Noël et al. 2014, 2015](Figure 6). La mise en évidence du rôle des microorganismes dans la formation de ces sulfures fait l’objet de la thèse de Maya Ikogou dirigée par F. Juillot et G. Ona-Nguema [Ikogou et al. in press]. La formation de pyrites nickelifères dans les sédiments de mangroves contribuent naturellement à protéger le lagon, classé au Patrimoine Mondial de l’Humanité par l’UNESCO, des apports métalliques liés à l’érosion des gisements latéritiques de nickel. Cependant la réoxydation de ces pyrites par les cycles de marées conduit à une remobilisation de Ni2+ vers les eaux porales, ce qui pourrait faciliter son transfert vers le lagon [Noël et al. 2015]. Ceci pourrait aussi favoriser la bioaccumulation du nickel, observée jusqu’à des concentrations exceptionnellement élevées dans certaines feuilles de palétuviers, même si les racines semblent limiter la translocation des métaux (Marchand et al., 2016).

Aval du cycle nucléaire


 Contrôle minéralogique de la mobilité de l’uranium. Le cycle du combustible nucléaire génère des résidus miniers dont il est important de cerner l’impact environnemental. Dans le cadre de la thèse de Guillaume Othmane (2009-2012) effectuée sous la direction de T. Allard (CR CNRS IMPMC), N. Menguy (PR UPMC IMPMC) et M. Fayek (Univ. Manitoba) nous avons déterminé les formes chimiques de l’uranium dans des résidus miniers du site d’Uranium City, au Canada [Othmane et al. 2013a], ainsi que dans les opales du gisement de Nopal au Mexique [Othmane et al. 2013b ; 2016]. A Uranium City,  l’uranium est présent essentiellement sous forme de groupements uranyles adsorbés sur des ferrihydrites, et dans une moindre mesure à des chlorites. Le piégeage de l’uranium repose donc sur des processus de sorption (Figure 7). A Nopal, nous avons mis en évidence la présence d’un minéral rare, la vorlanite (CaUO4), et d’uranyle sous la forme de complexes phosphatés ou hydroxo-polynucléaires tous piégés dans la silice. La luminescence, souvent utilisée pour la prospection, est ici proposée comme sonde de pH de formation des opales, en référence à différentes conditions de synthèse explorées en parallèle au laboratoire.

Avec l’IRSN, nous analysons la spéciation et la mobilité de l’uranium dans les sédiments lacustres impactés par des activités minières anciennes (projet NEEDS-USEDIM  2013-2015). Nous avons ainsi montré que l’uranium est essentiellement présent sous la forme de complexes sorbés de U(IV) et de phosphates de U(IV) nanocristallins dans ces sédiments [Morin et al. 2016]. Ceci remet en question la vision classique de l’immobilisation de l’uranium sous forme de UO2 insoluble, avec des implications sur  le comportement de l’uranium lors de changement de conditions redox, en particulier après le curage des sédiments (projet NEEDS-RUMBA 2016-2017).

Biominéralisation des métalloïdes et des radionucléides dans les biofilms


Rôles des phosphates de fer microbiens. L’effort important que nous avons porté pour comprendre les mécanismes de la biominéralisation du fer nous a amené à mettre en évidence l’importance des phosphates de fer biogéniques.  Nous avons par exemple montré que les phosphates ferriques amorphes, constituants majeurs de la ferritine bactérienne, sont des précurseurs de la formation intracellulaire des magnétites [Baumgartner et al., 2013]. Les phosphates de fer microbiens contrôlent également le cycle du phosphore dans certains milieux lacustres [Cosmidis et al. 2014]. En outre, ces phases nanocristallines sont capables de piéger des métalloïdes comme l’arsenic [Muehe et al. 2016] et des radionucléides dans les biofilms [Seder Colomina et al. 2014, 2015a]. Au cours de la thèse de Marina Seder Colomina (2011-2014) menée avec l’Université Paris Est et l’IRSTEA, nous avons notamment démontré le piégeage de l’uranium pas des phosphates de fer fixés sur des bactéries neutrophiles filamenteuses [Seder Colomina et al. 2015b].

Nano-oxydes pour la remédiation des pollutions

Les impuretés présentes dans les ferrihydrites naturelles (Al, Si, P, S…) sont actuellement très étudiées car elles peuvent modifier leur structure encore récemment débatue [Guyodo et al. 2012], leur formation et leur évolution [Miot et al. 2016] et leur propriétés de sorption vis-à-vis des contaminants. Lors de la thèse de Areej Adra (2010-2014), nous avons mis en évidence pour la première fois le piégeage de l’arsenic par des ferrihydrites alumineuses dans les sédiments de rivière à l’aval de la Mine de Carnoulès, Gard [Adra et al. 2013]. Nous avons aussi montré que la présence d’aluminium en substitution du fer dans la ferrihydrite modifie de façon majeure l’efficacité de la sorption de l’arsenic, avec des effets différents pour As(III) et As(V) [Adra et al. 2016].

Une nouvelle direction importante de nos travaux a concerné la recherche de propriétés de surface remarquables des nanoparticules naturelles et synthétiques. Les nano-magnétites piègent très efficacement de nombreux contaminants inorganiques tels que l’arsenic [Wang et al. 2014]. Au-delà de ces propriétés de sorption, nous avons récemment montré que les nano-magnétites possèdent une réactivité de surface particulière qui permet la production d’espèces réactives de l’oxygène (ROS, reactive oxygen species) capables d’oxyder et de dégrader  des polluants organiques adsorbés à leur surface [Ardo et al., 2015]. Ce nouveau procédé qui ne nécessite pas d’oxydants forts, a fait l’objet d’une déclaration d’invention auprès de l’UPMC/CNRS/INRA. Ces travaux ont été réalisés au cours de la thèse de Sandy Ardo (2011-2014) avec Sylvie Nelieu (INRA) dans le cadre d’un projet Innovations Technologiques du Réseau de Recherche francilien sur le Développement Soutenable (R2DS) de la région IdF.  Certaines nanoparticules biogéniques peuvent également se comporter comme des réducteurs chimiques pour une large variété de polluants, offrant ainsi des perspectives intéressantes pour des procédés alternatifs de traitement des eaux. Nous avons notamment validé un nouveau mécanisme de réduction des ions nitrate au travers d’un brevet déposé au cours de l’ANR ECOTECH (2010-2013) [Guerbois et al., Brevet 2016 - Réf. CNRS : 05970-01], mené en collaboration avec le LCPME à Nancy et plusieurs partenaires industriels (SAUR et Marion-Technology) (Thèse de Delphine Guerbois à l’IMPMC 2010-2013) [Guerbois et al. 2014 ; Ruby et al. 2016]. Ces thèmes seront poursuivi au cours des prochaines années en favorisant les interactions avec les partenaires de l’axe 3 « Interfaces, transport, reactivity in natural media » du LABEX MATISSE.
